I am so excited to finally share this fun DIY Cars themed bedroom with you! My little guy Mr. A, who is 4 has always been fascinated with cars. Deciding on a theme for his room was a no brainer!

I refinished the tool chest dresser several years ago for his older brother’s room, Mr. G. His room was also car themed but he really could have cared less, cars are just not his thing. So I knew it would be the perfect piece in Mr. A’s room.

I found an old lateral filing cabinet at a local thrift store for $15 and transformed it into what you see now as the tool chest dresser. See the full Tool Chest Dresser tutorial here.

I LOVE finding vintage pieces that once served a purpose and have a story behind them, like this 40’s Pontiac steering wheel and 1951-1952 Buick Hood Emblem. I found them at a local vintage market.

PRO TIP: If you’re planning to buy multiple items from the same vendor ask if they’ll consider a special bundle pricing. Works every time!

The tire clock came from Harbor Freight of all places!

This vintage Radio Flyer Red Wagon also came from my excursion to the local vintage shop! I was so happy to finally get my hands on one of these! I wanted a place to showcase all of Mr. A’s little treasures. I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.

With my sentimentality, I knew I had to incorporate even more memories from my Grandpas and Great-Grandpas. What better way than printing up multiple pictures of them with their old cars!

My Great-Grandpa even raced a real Hudson Hornet back in his day! Boy was it fun telling Mr. A that his very own Great-Great-Grandpa was a real race car driver!

These stainless steel grates were purchased at NPS and I thought they would be awesome to hang on the wall to display these old photos! What these grates are used for I don’t know, but I’m all about giving old items a new purpose anyway.

Initially I thought they’d be magnetic and I could stick all of Mr. A’s cars onto it so he could put them away easily as well as having them be displayed. Turns out they’re not.

So my Mom and I later came up with the idea to use lanyard badge clips and screw them directly onto the stainless steel grates and use those clips to attach the photos.

How were we going to display all of his cars if we couldn’t stick them to the grate? We took a trip to Harbor Freight and bought magnetic strips to hang tools on, only to find out that all of his cars are plastic!

To the drawing board again. We decided to make these cute little display shelves for his cars, using fence slats and angled aluminum.

They are the perfect depth for his cars and he absolutely loves that he can display them however he wants and he doesn’t have to dig through a bin to find a specific car anymore!

Can I tell you how excited I was to see this Cars bedding line at Target?! I loved how the image was quilted on instead of a busy printed background!

(I’m sorry but Target no longer carries this bedding.)

I felt his room would age with him better with this quilt than a more juvenile quilt. Add a lightyear tire throw pillow and Lightning McQueen throw on the bed and voila it completes the look.

I’m sure you’ve seen many IKEA hacks and boy do I love their curtains for an easy and customized look! Adding stripes with red paint really makes a dramatic statement in this room.

And check out this awesome towing hook I found on the same trip to NPS! At the time, I didn’t know how I was going to attach them to the wall and use them to hang curtains, I just knew it would look awesome and I’d find a way to make it work.

Adding a little artwork above the storage center helps ground this space altogether. I found this fun vintage-looking map at Hobby Lobby and made the Route 66 sign to hang above it.

Another fun idea to add to a kid’s bedroom is LED strip lights.
