This easy and delicious Paleo Salisbury Steak is made all in one skillet, kid friendly, Whole30 and keto friendly and perfect with your favorite mashed cauliflower or potatoes.
Salisbury steak is definitely my favorite nostalgic dinner from back in the TV dinner days!
I made paleo Salisbury steak meatballs several years ago but was recently inspired to create the real deal after a major craving.
These steaks are easy and fast, don’t require any complicated or hard to find ingredients and the gravy is out of this world delicious!
Let’s get into all the recipe details.
What You Need to Make Paleo Salisbury Steak
Even though “steak” is in the name, you’re actually using ground beef which makes this recipe not only delicious and healthy, but budget friendly too!
Here’s everything you’ll need to prepare this Salisbury steak:
- ground beef
- yellow onion
- garlic cloves
- almond flour
- sea salt and black pepper
- egg
- paleo friendly ketchup
- dijon mustard
- coconut aminos
- olive oil
Gravy:
- ghee or oil
- onion, chopped
- garlic cloves
- mushrooms
- arrowroot flour, or tapioca
- beef broth, or beef bone broth
- dijon mustard
- coconut aminos
- sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
- Fresh chopped parsley
How to Make this Paleo Salisbury Steak
In a large bowl, combine the beef with the onion, garlic, almond flour, salt and pepper, egg, ketchup, mustard and aminos. Mix well with your hands until well combined without overworking. Shape into oval patties about 3/4” thick.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Cook the patties just long enough to brown the outside on both sides, about 60 seconds each (they will not be cooked through) remove to a plate.
Add a tablespoon of ghee and lower the heat to medium. Cook the onions for one minute, then add the garlic and cook another 30 seconds, then addmushrooms and cook to soften.
Add the second tablespoon of ghee and whisk in the arrowroot. Slowly pour in the broth while stirring, then add the mustard and aminos. Add the patties and any juices back to the skillet, then cook until steaks are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
Spoon the sauce over the steaks and sprinkle with chopped parsley.
What To Serve with Paleo Salisbury Steak
To keep the meal low carb, you can go with a mashed cauliflower (you can try this recipe!) or cauliflower rice.
Of course if you eat potatoes, mashed potatoes would be delicious and I’ve also served it with roasted baby potatoes.
Add some greens or a side salad and you’re good to go!
I hope you’re ready for a meal that you’ll want on repeat in your house! I hope you love it as much as we do 🙂
Grab your ingredients and your favorite big skillet because it’s time to cook – let’s go!

Oh, I so needed comfort food tonight , and this filled the bill! You’re right; I had everything on hand. Nice, interesting blend of flavors with nothing being too strong, and not remotely bland. Just tasty! I don’t think I’ve had salisbury steak since i was a kid, with TV dinners. (bleah). thank you for this. Even my picky, non-red-meat-loving husband quite enjoyed it. Will definitely have it again.Reply

Holy cow this was absolutely delicious! Can’t believe this is whole 30. My husband devoured every last pie! Cannot wait to keep this on our menu rotation!Reply

The flavor was decent, but my patties completely fell apart… I don’t know if that means I need to add more egg? So it turned into a hamburger scramble instead. I had fattier ground beef, so I don’t know if that impacted it.Reply

Hi! Any suggestions what to use instead of almond flour for a nut allergy? Thanks!

This dish was SO delicious! The patties were delicate and required “finessing” but it was so worth it.Reply

This was very flavorful and delish! My family loved it. I can’t eat mushrooms, so I left it out, but my husband said they definitely would have been great. Thanks for a great recipe.Reply

Our new go to Salisbury steak recipe. No more eating out of a box box for us. Seriously, my son’s favourite meal is salisbury steak, but the Stouffers stuff. I made this for him one Sunday. His reaction… “I never want that boxed stuff again MOM”. Even better the next day! If you have leftovers that is!Reply

Hi thank you for this recipe. I’m new to all this & I’m not even sure if this blog is even active anymore but I just wanted to reach to to ask if there’s anything I can use instead of arrowroot or tapioca for the gravy since I really would rather not use any type of starch. Any other thickening agent? Also, is there something else I can use that’s lower in carbs in place of the Coconut Aminos? What do you recommend? And finally, is there something else I can use in place of the almond flour? I can’t really have any nuts or seeds. Can pork panko be used instead or not really? THANK YOU SO MUCHReply
